Art

During the month of September, second class has been very busy creating beautiful pieces of artwork. We particularly like painting and really enjoyed making a mess doing our splatter paintings! We love to add colour to our classroom and around the school, by displaying our work. Our favourite piece of artwork this month was the display, “There is something fishy going on!” We are really looking forward to art in October.

Our Sound WalkTransparent or Opaque

Science

Second class is full of little scientists. We have been busy doing experiments about light and sound. We investigated lots of objects to see whether they were transparent or opaque, then we went on a sound walk around our school building, our school grounds and even around our locality! It was so much fun predicting, experimenting and recording our findings.[divider]

Maths

This month we focussed on both mental maths and problem solving. We used lots of hands on resources, our interactive whiteboard and games to help us learn mental maths strategies. We are really becoming experts at our tables! Every day we solve a problem in school and at home. We even have a problem solving area in our classroom. I bet you won’t be able to catch us out!

Maths

During October, we took part in lots of different activities for Maths Week. Our favourite was the maths trail that teacher made for us. We really enjoyed using photographs to find all the pumpkins that were hidden around the school grounds. They were hidden everywhere; in the field, the shed, the astroturf, the junior yard, the basketball net and even in the garden! When we found all the numbers, we had to race to create a target board and make the target number. We can’t wait to do the next maths trail, it was so much fun!

History

This month all the boys and girls in 2nd class looked at how much we have grown and changed. We read a story called “Once there were giants,” which we really enjoyed. The best of all was taking part in “Show and Tell.” For this, we brought something special into school from when we were young and told teacher and all the other children about it. It was very funny looking at all the baby clothes, teddies and toys for small children. We really have grown up!

Show and Tell

Second class is full of little bookworms! We completed the Literacy Lift Off programme during October. It was so much fun working in small groups for reading, writing and learning how to use our new dictionaries. Best of all is that our reading has really improved and now we love going to the class and school libraries.

Line of the week

        Line of the week

Second class won the “line of the week” trophy this month. Mr. Feeney decided that our line was the best in the whole school. We were awarded golden time to play on the astroturf. We really want to win it again soon!

Enrolment Mass

We took the first steps to prepare for our First Holy Communion this month. On Sunday 20th October, our enrolment mass took place in Ahane Church. We are really looking forward to our next “Do this in memory” mass on November 17th.

History

This month, 2nd class was very busy working as historians. Teacher gave us lots of unusual and intriguing objects to examine. We had great fun handling them, trying to guess what they were called and what they were used for. Eventually, we figured out that we had butter clappers, a lantern, an iron, a hair clipper, an old fashioned camera and even a hot water jar! We really enjoyed telling our classmates all about our old artefacts.

Science

During the month of November, the scientists in 2nd class were busy at work again! This time we were testing to see what was magnetic in our classroom. We found lots of magnetic objects but discovered that not all metal objects are magnetic. Isn’t that interesting? Best of all was that we designed and created our own car and racetrack. It was so much fun racing our cars using magnets.

Active School Flag

Lisnagry National School is working hard to try to achieve the Active School Flag. For this, we need to encourage physical activity and promote healthy exercise. To begin with, we had a competition to design an Active School logo and slogan. Hazel Coulter from 2nd class had a fantastic slogan, “There’s more to life than watching TV, get up, get out and be healthy.” Hazel now represents our class on the Active School Committee. Well done Hazel!

“Do this in Memory” Mass

On Sunday 17th November, our second “Do this in Memory” mass took place in Ahane Church. Lots of boys and girls helped Fr. Tom during the mass. We are looking forward to our next mass early in the New Year. Sr Essie also visited 2nd class this month and complimented us on how well we are preparing for our First Holy Communion.

Tennis

A tennis coach came to visit our school this month. We had great fun doing warm-up exercises, bouncing and catching tennis balls and using the tennis racquets. We had to really concentrate to balance a ball on our racquet and move all at once. Best of all was when we had to trap the ball between two racquets. We had so much fun and really hope the tennis coach visits again soon.

Maths

During January we really enjoyed maths. We were learning all about data. For this we visited each class in the school to conduct a survey. We displayed our findings on block graphs.  Now we can see which classes prefer certain colours, toys, sweets, sports and even school subjects! Come and see the block graphs displayed outside our classroom.

English

This month we practiced writing reports. First of all we wrote reports on an animal of our choice. Teacher gave us really cool homework, we had to go online and find out lots of facts about our animal. In school, we wrote a report and told our classmates all about it. Next, we wrote book reports to help our friends when choosing a book in the library.

Science

Our budding scientists were busy again in January. This time we examined all the electrical appliances at home and in school. We discovered that some use a plug to work while others are battery operated. We participated in some experiments on static electricity using balloons and pieces of paper. It was hilarious seeing what a balloon could do to hair. We all looked like Jedward, even Ms. Carroll!!

PE

This month we started swimming lessons in U.L. Every Monday a bus collects us and brings us to the 50m pool. We are learning all the different strokes and how to breathe properly when swimming. Some of us are brave enough to jump into the deep end!
